london-based producer, visual artist and nts radio host kit grill has announced a new 5-track ep, titled westway. the ep will be available digitally along with a limited run of 200 vinyl copies designed by alex sullivan, with cover photography by grill and an accompanying video by london director laurie lynch. westway draws on grill’s personal experiences of living in a cityscape and echoes the industrial, fast-paced and repetitive rhythm of his home city, london. the ep was recorded over the course of several months from early 2015 to february of this year, the propulsive beats and driving, shimmering synthwork across tracks like ‘distance’ and ‘street runner’ inspired by and echoing the brutalist beauty of the capital, culminating in the euphoric, widescreen string flourishes of closing track ‘stairway’.

cocytus, meaning -the river of wailing“, is a river in the underworld in greek mythology. it flows into the river acheron, across which is the underworld, the mythological abode of the dead. dante describes cocytus in inferno as being the home of traitors and those who committed acts of complex fraud. the river of wailing is divided into four arms: antenora, after antenor from the iliad, traitors to country. judecca, after judas iscariot, traitors to masters and benefactors. caina, after the biblical cain, traitors to blood relatives. ptolomea, after ptolemy, governor of jericho, who murdered his guests (1 maccabees), traitors to guests. based on these assumptions cot labelhead hours crafted three pensive tracks, one of which was reinterpreted by brian sanhaji.

having previously turned out some refined club tracks for friendly neighbourhood label banoffee pies, christian jay comes to idle hands for his debut solo 12inch. as revealed in our past support of artists such as i.a. bericochea and matt karmil, an appreciation of the finer end of the minimal house and techno spectrum weighs heavy at idle hands hq, and christian embodies everything good about the micro-genre. the stylistic approach on this single is consistent across both tracks, fusing shuffling, 2-step fuelled drum patterns with blissful atmospheric content in a most natural of ways. on 117 this manifests in a more flamboyant end result peppered with playful hi-hat tones and delicate melodic licks, while on contrail the mood is resolutely low-end focused with some choice bass touches in amongst the tightly wound funk of the beat. what makes jay s efforts stand out is their immersive finish, using dexterous doses of dub processing to create a quintessentially bristolian mood while retaining the razor-sharp edges of upfront european minimal. its a tone that speaks to limbering up at the start of the party, or shaking down deep into the morning. that said, we could listen to this all day and night.

over the last few years, dutch electronic misfit vc-118a has delivered a number of killer eps and 12inch singles, each packed with sharp-edged electro, spacey techno, and industrial-strength analogue house. shift regsiter is his second full-length excursion his debut, international airlines, appeared on lunar disko back in 2012 and offers an expansive and hugely atmospheric journey through his trademark sound. naturally, there s much to admire across the 14 tracks, from the woozy, spaced-out electro-dub of input mode and the sparkling idm of serial data transmission, to the ultra-deep throb of radiation curve, and the hard-wired dancefloor bounce of the drexciya-like apex

argot excavates an unexplored corner of chicago house history. lab work 91-96 collects the work of chris ike and john kardaras, two chicago producers with few records to their names but a wealth of compelling unreleased material waiting in their archives. the compilation highlights the pair’s particular vision and musical breadth across 14 tracks, drawn from a cd-r given to steve mizek in 2010 that was recently rediscovered. lab work was remastered in it’s entirety by dietrich schoenemann, sounding much at home today yet intimately connected to a formative time in chicago house history.

andrea pellegrinelli and davide brugola are two men born and bred in the traditions of italo and electro disco. the duo, as forklift & saw, release their debut 12”, regression, as they melt past influences into the present. meandering hooks, emotion soaked keys and snapping rhythms are at the centre of this milan partnership s music. across four tracks the pair delivers crashing snares, starlit synths and rumbling arpeggiators. infectious full bodied funk oozes from this fledgling outfit, crisp percussion supporting their night gazing melodies. welcome to the world of forklift & saw.

seven years, who cares? no one really but it seemed like a good excuse to do something a bit different. we spoke to some the artists that have helped shape wolf over the years and asked whether they would like to contribute to a double 7 inch release. excited by the unusual project session victim, frits wentink, greymatter & mr. fries have delivered four original tracks with the format in mind. hip hop, beat down, low slung & upfront house all contained across two records. this release will be vinyl only.

jack murphy s debut 12inch on new label knowing something. having previously released records on frozen border sublabel reference and dont be afraid s special editions series, murphy now ventures out on his own with this first knowing something record. the record across its four tracks takes cues from a variety of places including mid-90s breaky techno, late 90s electro, and early 2000s ifach records.

long celebrated as a hub for new producers to showcase their talents, cdr return to the releasing game in partnership with dimensions festival. up and coming house heads k15 and fyi chris reportedly invited lismore and ben houghton to take part in this collaborative release, resulting in four tracks that wouldn t sound out of place soundtracking a balmy afternoon dance on the adriatic sea. oozing quality and soul throughout, there s a distinctly laid back flavour to the house on offer across this release, although fyi chris add a touch more bite with their grubby lo-fi synth lines on -sugar-.

funk was the syncopated groove that emerged in the mid-sixties through hits from james brown and dyke and the blazers. it was a natural development out of rhythm and blues. thousands of local bands tried to emulate brown’s success, and in the process created a plethora of rare and sought after 45s and album cuts that have been mined by djs and producers to fill floors or provide breakbeats. whilst the 20 tracks on this compilation would cost you thousands of pounds to own on their original issue, that isn’t really the point. instead you get to listen to magnificent grooves such as mickey & the soul generations explosive ‘iron leg’, andrew brown’s blues tinged ‘you made me suffer’ or the message music of 24 carat black.

after debuting their label with the return of headhunter, the trusik team returns with their second vinyl release from the ever-illusive ruffcut faculty member tremble. tremble has quietly made his presence known with reggae influenced tunes that are simultaneously roughly hewn, yet meticulous detailed in sound design. for trsk002, tremble gives us “too much terror”, which with all the daily attacks on civilians across the nations of the world, seems prescient. what starts out as sound system inspired roller slowly morphs into a technoid fusion of dread sub weight and dub techno chord flourishes. on the flipside, tremble simmers the tempo down to the 130ish range with “bwoy”. dancehall indebted sub detonations output cut vicious shapes while filtered rasta portents gradually build into a technoid climax. two killer sides for the concerning djs! for trsk002, trusik has incorporated artist ben ladieu’s immaculate pen and ink drawing into the overall aesthetic of the release. ladieu’s work is often dense, multi-layered and full of little hidden details that draw comparisons to 80’s diy punk flyers and zeke clough’s contributions to seminal dubstep label skull disco and woe to the septic heart.

newcomer region takes no time to get his credentials across, and this debut ep is all you could possibly ask for from an artist making their way up the food chain. coming though on the young jaunt label, region dishes out some seriously magnificent dub techno lashings here, with the opener -subline- being something of rough gem, the remix comes from lies-associate voiski, and the frenchman strips the whole thing down to a deeper, murkier tone that we ve come to associate him to. -borders-, on the b-side, is a supremely deep and meditative house track with a touch of the shed in it, and main man basic soul unit drops his version of the tune, a broken beat assemblage with that same dubwise feel that wraps the groove of the original cut.

the grooves of thomas white and pete williams aka natural rhythm, have been a mainstay in the sets of robsoul boss phil weeks for more than a decade. today he pays ‘tribute’ with a special re-release of some of his favourites. born in a garage in the late 90’s, natural rhythm was a meeting of passionate musical minds. working together the pair sought to create their own style and sound, influenced by the tracks they were regularly spinning in their own dj sets across the country. creative sampling and their own raw beats, together with live instrumentation and regular guest vocalists, saw natural rhythm create a strong catalogue that, as we know, are still getting played today. with three albums and over 35 ep/single releases to their name, there more than enough music for label boss weeks to select from for the tribute ep. a tough job? of course. however, phil went straight for the four that never leave his box. leading the ep are the sun-drenched vocal vibes of ‘something big’, the title track of natural rhythm’s 1999 release on under the counter. our a2 is the lead track from 2001’s last call at the martini ranch ep, ‘chicago nights’, with its quaking bassline and disco dalliance. on the flip we’re treated to a choice selection from natural rhythm’s 1999 double album contrast in nature. first up with its celestial chimes and thumping kick is ‘smoldering island’, taken from the original part 1. closing the tribute release and taken from part 2 is the devilishly funky and suitably titled feelgood jam ‘energized’. we definitely are!

keeping up their regular and on point release schedule, french outlet d3 elements now looks to a dj and producer from the southside of chicago. ellery cowles has been making unique house sounds since the mid 1990s as well as being a respected dj who is revered across the states. his music has come solo as well as in collaboration with the legendary likes of ron maney, roy davis jr and brian harden and cowles has released on labels like dafunk, hybrid and hizou deep rooted music.

chicagos peven everett has long had a cult following for his own unique, live take on house music. fusing the finest elements of gospel, soul, funk and disco his tracks have always had something that most other producers lack originality! his music has crossed over many different genre barriers and has been supported by the widest selection of top dj s for many years with his cuts becoming stone cold anthems in clubs across the globe. i cant believe i loved her is one such track, a soulful piece lamenting a love that went wrong, the pain and disappointment are evident in peven s voice and playing but the track remains utterly danceable, a real bomb! on it s original 2002 release the track was a huge club hit, pushing it into classic status. both original mixes are featured here on this legit reissue, 100% sanctioned by king street records, nyc. brought back for 2016, an evergreen deep house classic essential business!

derek carr is a name known by few and far between, with only a handful of vinyl releases in the early 2000s, he built a worthy but unfortunately not widely-spread reputation for putting together stunning deep techno. originally pressed in finite numbers, the records have recently found themselves in demand on discogs, and rightly so, derek’s music is in a class of its own. having been a big fan since his releases on then local (to label owner ben) leeds label geek records, for those that knoe has dug deep into the archives to put together a sizeable selection of dereks back catalogue, with some unreleased gems dotted amongst the classic must-haves, spread across three eps
